Philip Morris,a cigarette producer, opened in New York in 1902 branch office to sell a number of its brands, Marlboro inclusive. By 1924 they started advertising Marlboro as cigarette for woman. This selling was based on the slogan "Mild As May". This brand was successful until World War II when the brand stopped being popular and was removed from the marketplace. By the end of the war, three major brands appeared: Lucky Strike , Chesterfield and Camel. They took a firm position on this market. Nevertheless, Marlboro cigarettes returned in 1950s with a new cowboy image that was introduced in publicity and the sales flew by 5000%. Reader's Digest magazine published a number of articles that linked up smoking with lung cancer. Cigarette companies, including Philip Morris, took this notice and each started to produce cigarettes with filters. The new filtered Marlboro was launched in 1955.It has the name after Great Marlborough Street, this is the location of its native London factory. Nowadays, Richmond, state Virginia, is the largest Marlboro manufacturing plant.
